WELCOME

After years of my own research and finally taking the steps to have an alternative energy source added to my home, I decided to create this space to share my own solar panel installation experience.

The Basics

If you want to get straight to the basics....this is for you:

Here I've put the basic rundown of my home solar system.
You can find more details on any of the items by using the menu at the top of the page.

  • My electric consumption:

    • Average 12 month electric consumption: 12,000-13,000kwh (~1,000kwh/month)

    • Electric rate is $0.18 per kwh (as of mid 2024):

      • $0.06+ per kwh for supplier charge (fixed contractual rate)

      • $0.12 per kwh for delivery charge

    • For an annual cost of ~$2,160 - $2,340

  • My home solar panel system:

    • Size: 13.94kW

    • Roof mounted, tied to grid, net metering setup

    • No batteries installed

    • Panels warrantied to produce greater than 90% of rated output for 30 years

  • Financials:

    • Purchased cash (did not lease, did not take loan) to reduce payback

    • Total Upfront Out-of-Pocket Cost: $29,950 (received ~$2500 solar panel mfr. discount)

    • 30% federal solar tax credit: ~$8,985

    • Total Out-of-Pocket after tax credit applied: $20,965

    • Back of Napkin pay back period: $20,965/$2160: 9.7 years (at today's costs)
      (Total out-of-pocket/annual electric charge)

    • Additional potential income not considered in payback (SRECs, referrals, etc.)
